Au-del\u00e0 de ces domaines, l&#8217;usage de ces grilles est peu r\u00e9pandu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Le 12 octobre dernier, IBM a annonc\u00e9 le rachat d\u2019un acteur majeur du march\u00e9 du grid computing\u00a0: Platform Computing. A cette occasion, nous revenons sur les principes, apports et d\u00e9fis de ce type de technologies peu connu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Qu\u2019est-ce que le <em>grid computing<\/em>\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le <em>grid computing <\/em>consiste \u00e0 mettre en commun des ressources logicielles et mat\u00e9rielles distribu\u00e9es (ensemble que l\u2019on appelle la \u00ab\u00a0grille\u00a0\u00bb) afin de fournir une puissance de calcul importante. La charge de travail est divis\u00e9e en sous-t\u00e2ches qui sont trait\u00e9es en parall\u00e8le par les ressources de la grille, les r\u00e9sultats \u00e9tant ensuite agr\u00e9g\u00e9s dans un r\u00e9sultat global rendu \u00e0 l\u2019utilisateur.<\/p>\n<p>En anglais, l\u2019emprunt du mot \u00ab\u00a0grid\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019expression \u00ab\u00a0electric power grid\u00a0\u00bb qui d\u00e9signe le r\u00e9seau \u00e9lectrique, traduit bien les promesses du concept\u00a0: l\u2019utilisateur se branche \u00e0 la grille qui pourvoit \u00e0 son besoin. Peu lui importe la complexit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me, l\u2019h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 ou la distribution des composants, masqu\u00e9s par l\u2019interface d\u2019acc\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>Des projets embl\u00e9matiques donnent le ton, en mati\u00e8re de gigantisme\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SETI@HOME se pr\u00e9sente comme \u00ab\u00a0une exp\u00e9rience scientifique qui utilise des ordinateurs reli\u00e9s \u00e0 internet pour la recherche d&#8217;une intelligence extraterrestre (SETI)\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0; elle tire sa puissance de son \u00ab\u00a0ouverture\u00a0\u00bb aux ordinateurs des internautes volontaires ;<\/li>\n<li>La grille du LHC, l\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur de particules du <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cern.ch\/\">CERN<\/a>, \u00a0relie en mode \u00ab\u00a0ferm\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, plusieurs dizaines de milliers de machines, situ\u00e9es sur trois continents, pour analyser des donn\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La puissance des ordinateurs a beau cro\u00eetre, la \u00ab\u00a0gourmandise\u00a0\u00bb de tels projets scientifiques, atteint des niveaux qui justifient ce mod\u00e8le d\u2019architecture. Dans le sillage des initiatives acad\u00e9miques, l\u2019industrie et le secteur bancaire s\u2019en sont empar\u00e9s pour r\u00e9soudre leurs probl\u00e8mes complexes\u00a0: valorisation et analyse de risque pour la finance, d\u00e9tection de gisements pour le p\u00e9trole, simulation et analyse de crash pour l\u2019automobile. Aujourd\u2019hui, les grilles int\u00e9ressent les m\u00e9dias, les jeux en ligne, les fournisseurs internet\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Quels b\u00e9n\u00e9fices attendre du grid computing\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le <em>grid computing<\/em> peut apporter beaucoup aux secteurs tant priv\u00e9s\u00a0que publics pour les projets qui requi\u00e8rent une quantit\u00e9 importante de puissance de traitement dans une p\u00e9riode de temps restreinte.<\/p>\n<p>Les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices attendus d\u2019une grille sont\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>l\u2019am\u00e9lioration des performances tout en limitant les co\u00fbts,<\/li>\n<li>l\u2019augmentation de la flexibilit\u00e9 d\u2019une infrastructure pour absorber les augmentations d\u2019\u00e9chelle,<\/li>\n<li>la haute disponibilit\u00e9 de cette infrastructure faces aux pics de charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Les vertus \u00ab\u00a0informatiques\u00a0\u00bb du <em>grid computing <\/em>se transforment en atouts \u00ab\u00a0m\u00e9tiers\u00a0\u00bb : r\u00e9duire les temps de calculs, c\u2019est \u00e9viter les retards ou gagner du temps pour accro\u00eetre la comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9 et\/ou pour am\u00e9liorer ses processus.<\/p>\n<p>Les <em>middlewares<\/em> \u00ab\u00a0commerciaux\u00a0\u00bb (citons pour l\u2019exemple\u00a0ceux de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.platform.com\/\">Platform<\/a> Computing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datasynapse.com\/\">Tibco Datasynapse<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gridgain.com\/\">GridGain<\/a> en <em>open source<\/em>) ont bien saisi ces enjeux. D\u00e9velopp\u00e9s \u00e0 la suite des grilles acad\u00e9miques par transferts technologiques, ils tirent profit de ces besoins en proposant des solutions sur \u00e9tag\u00e8res et leur expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Certes, ils \u00e9voluent sur un march\u00e9 de niche, celui \u00a0constitu\u00e9 des clients historiques (banques, industries du p\u00e9trole, de l\u2019automobile etc.). Mais avec la croissance exponentielle des volumes d\u2019information, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements (CEP) ou de donn\u00e9es (<em>Big Data<\/em>), et la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de les exploiter, le positionnement du <em>grid computing<\/em> pourrait bien se renforcer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Quels sont les d\u00e9fis \u00e0 relever\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le concept de <em>grid computing, <\/em>ainsi que les produits du march\u00e9, sont arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 maturit\u00e9 au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie. Pourtant, il reste encore quelques barri\u00e8res \u00e0 franchir pour assister \u00e0 une d\u00e9mocratisation de cette approche\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>L\u2019expertise et le support des grilles informatiques ont un co\u00fbt<\/strong>\u00a0: il faut des techniciens qualifi\u00e9s pour passer la barri\u00e8re technologique des produits, ou d\u00e9velopper\/maintenir une grille \u00ab\u00a0maison\u00a0\u00bb, mais aussi \u00ab\u00a0gridifier\u00a0\u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire adapter ou d\u00e9velopper des applications pour une ex\u00e9cution sur la grille. A ces co\u00fbts s\u2019ajoutent ceux des probl\u00e9matiques connexes tels que le stockage ou le transfert des donn\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<li><strong>De plus, l\u2019infrastructure peut n\u00e9cessiter un investissement d\u00e9di\u00e9.<\/strong>Chaque entreprise dispose g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement d\u2019un ensemble cons\u00e9quent d\u2019ordinateurs connect\u00e9s en r\u00e9seau mais l\u2019usage en grille de ces ressources existantes n\u2019est pas \u00e9vident\u00a0:\n<ul>\n<li>La tendance \u00e0 la virtualisation a progressivement optimis\u00e9 l\u2019usage des ressources serveurs qui sont moins sous-exploit\u00e9s qu\u2019il y a une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<li>Les pr\u00e9occupations \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques interrogent sur l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat, en entreprise, du mod\u00e8le des grilles fond\u00e9es sur des parcs d\u2019ordinateurs peu puissants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pour autant, le <em>grid computing<\/em> n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessairement l\u2019apanage des grandes structures. Internet autorise le partage de ressources avec des partenaires ext\u00e9rieurs\u00a0: des PME, des \u00e9coles ou des h\u00f4pitaux\u00a0 peuvent se f\u00e9d\u00e9rer pour b\u00e2tir des grilles qui leur sont inaccessibles, seuls.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Les grilles de calcul imposent un mod\u00e8le d\u2019architecture bien sp\u00e9cifique au sein du SI. De part leur caract\u00e8re intrusif, elles exigent de trouver des solutions ou des compromis notamment en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 mais \u00e9galement de d\u00e9passer les aprioris quant aux partages des ressources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pour autant, le plus gros des d\u00e9fis, pour les acteurs du march\u00e9, sera celui du marketing. Le <em>grid computing<\/em> doit aujourd\u2019hui savoir se faire entendre face \u00e0 des concepts phagocytaires car, quand il est question de \u00ab\u00a0<em>computing<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, le \u00ab\u00a0<em>cloud<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb vient brouiller les pistes.<\/p>\n<p>Pour l\u2019heure, si l\u2019entr\u00e9e sur le march\u00e9 d\u2019IBM ne r\u00e9sout pas ce probl\u00e8me d\u2019image, il confirme en revanche l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat du mod\u00e8le de \u00ab\u00a0grille\u00a0\u00bb et pr\u00e9figure une tendance, celle de l\u2019int\u00e9gration.
